The European Parliament adopted on 17 January its position on the EU’s Energy Union Governance Regulation. Whilst only a step in the legislative process of the EU, the Parliament’s vote lent strong political support to the development of an ambitious long-term decarbonisation pathway for the Union, which is the third largest emitter of GHG globally.

The Declaration builds on the work of the 2050 Pathways Platform and was signed by 16 developed and emerging countries, including 13 Platform member countries.

The 2050 Pathways Platform co-hosted a high-level event with the Fiji Presidency to discuss progress on long-term pathways and ambition, featuring the Marshall Islands, Germany, Ethiopia, New Zealand, Mexico, and Laurence Tubiana, founder of the 2050 Pathways Platform.

Laurence Tubiana visited India in early September 2017 to attend the Business and Climate Summit and hold meetings to discuss the possibility for India to engage with the 2050 Pathways Platform.

On 17th May 2017, during the Bonn UNFCCC Intersessional, the Pathways Platform held its first member meeting, after the Platform’s launch at COP22. The meeting was attended by nearly all members of the Platform as well as prospective members.

Partners to the 2050 Pathways platform met in Pocantico, New York, to discuss how to best support members in their endeavour to develop 2050 pathways. The meeting covered issues ranging from the need for a Handbook for 2050 pathways as well as developing a briefing to articulate with illustration the political case for development of 2050 pathways.
