Long-Term Strategies (LTS) are a crucial part of the global response to climate change, acting as comprehensive frameworks that guide nations in their transition to net-zero emissions. However, the path to net-zero by 2050 is complex, filled with uncertainties that make planning and decision-making challenging.
To tackle these multifaceted challenges – which involve a wide range of actors, objectives, and uncertainties – innovative and adaptive approaches are required. Robust Decision Making (RDM) is one such approach. It goes beyond traditional decision-making methods by involving stakeholders in defining objectives and crafting strategies that can remain effective across various future scenarios. RDM prioritizes flexibility and resilience, rather than relying on a single goal or outcome, making it particularly useful for climate change mitigation efforts.
Developed by The Climate Lead Group and the 2050 Pathways Platform, the RDM Guide presented here draws on lessons from Latin American and Caribbean countries that have used this methodology in designing their LTS. Its practical 10-step framework helps stakeholders at all levels co-create long-term strategies that stay robust and effective under a variety of uncertain conditions and scenarios.
