“2050 is Now”
Berlin June 9-10
Bridging Long-term Goals with Action Now
The 2050 Pathways Platform is hosting the Global LT-LEDS Convening on the 9th and 10th of June in Berlin as part of the “2050 Is Now” convening series, bringing together country representatives, experts, and development partners to mark a key milestone for the Long-Term Low Emission Development Strategies (LT-LEDS) community in the lead-up to COP30.
Building on the success of the 2024 Jakarta Regional Convening, where over 65 LT-LEDS practitioners discussed practical challenges and solutions to LT-LEDS formulation, this convening aims to foster discussions on aligning NDCs with LT-LEDS, in an effort to expand LT-LEDS potential in strengthening immediate action. The agenda is available here.
Why Now?
Governments, experts, and development partners are currently focused on the formulation and submission of the third Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs), or NDC 3.0. Preceding the upcoming Global NDC Conference, taking place from June 11-13 in Berlin, the Global LT-LEDS Convening provides a timely opportunity to bring together the LT-LEDS and NDC communities to exchange insights, showcase best practices, and reinforce the crucial link between long-term planning and near-term action as countries look ahead towards COP30 later this year in Belém.
Convening Goals
The convening seeks to facilitate peer-to-peer knowledge exchange across the long-term planning community, with a particular focus on NDC and LT-LEDS alignment, given the upcoming NDC 3.0 submissions. It will spotlight insights from the ‘2050 is now’ project, offering relevant research and expert perspectives to support the integration of LT-LEDS objectives into national planning. The event also provides a collaborative space for countries to share experiences, lessons learned, and foster international cooperation through engagement with development partners and climate experts.
Topics and Agenda at a Glance
The two-day event will focus on enhancing national and global climate strategies through the development and integration of LT-LEDS and NDCs and other national planning instruments.
Day 1: The first day will highlight country experiences and methodologies for developing robust long-term strategies aligned with national planning instruments. It will also include deep dives into tools and approaches for enhancing long-term planning in the agriculture, forests, and other land use sectors, as well as discussions on the institutional and economic conditions needed to support a just and sustained path to net zero.
Day 2: The second day will take a global perspective, exploring how LT-LEDS can shape the ambition of NDC 3.0 ahead of COP30, and how long-term planning efforts can foster international cooperation, finance, and policy alignment to drive implementation of climate and development goals.
Participants: Who is Joining?
Attendees include national government representatives from both developing and developed countries involved in coordinating LT-LEDS and NDC processes, LT-LEDS experts from non-governmental organisations, development partners focused on LT-LEDS financing, and global and local consortium partners of the ‘2050 is now’ initiative.
The 2050 is Now consortium would like to invite you to take this short pre-event survey to gather practical experiences from participants and promote shared learning. More specifically, the survey aims to collect participants’ views on the role and influence of long-term low-emission development strategies (LT-LEDS), Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) and their alignment. The results of this survey will be used to complement insights from agenda sessions, and group results may also be presented during one of the sessions. The survey takes less than five minutes to complete, click here to access it.
Thank you for your cooperation!
2050 Is Now: Aligning climate action with long-term climate and development goals
As part of the 2050 is now project, a four-year project launched by the German Government’s International Climate Initiative (IKI), the 2050 Pathways Platform leads regional and global convenings to share research, best practices, and insights on LT-LEDS, strengthening the broader community of practice and disseminating lessons from project activities. The Global LT-LEDS Convening is the second convening held under the auspices of this project, with the first being the Regional Convening held in Jakarta, Indonesia, on September 3rd and 4th, 2024. Check out the below infographic with a summary of the Jakarta Regional Convening’s reflections on the road to COP30, and you’ll find the full report of the Regional Convening here.
