Our activities at COP27

At COP27 in Sharm-El-Sheikh, the 2050 Pathways Platform Secretariat co-organised and participated in an inspiring set of events with country governments and key LTS stakeholders. The sessions showcased continuous ambition and action on LTS and reflected on lessons learnt and progress to date in various geographies. Below is a summary of our engagement activities at COP this year:

 

Week 1 – 6 November to 13 November

 

Co-hosted by the 2050 Pathways Platform and the Ministry of Environment and Sustainable Development of Senegal (MEDD), the event presented work underway to generate a robust, inclusive and ambitious long-term low-emission and climate resilient development strategy for Senegal. Panelists included voices from the MEDD, Enda Energie, IDDRI, the African Development Bank and Climate Analytics.

 Co-organised by the Climate Change Division of Jamaica and the 2050 Pathways Platform, this side event laid out a roadmap towards developing Jamaica’s long-term low-emission strategy and the linkages between NDCs and other national policies. The event was opened by the Minister of Economic Growth and Job Creation; speakers included high-level officials from the Climate Change Division and representatives of NDCP, the World Bank, the UK BEIS Department, and the local private sector. Panellists reflected on the central considerations for a successful LTS development process.

The Minister of Environment of Colombia hosted an event to share Colombia’s commitment to deliver the transition towards a net zero and climate resilience by 2050 as defined in their LTS and discuss with development partners solutions to tackle financial constraints to deliver investments and a just transition. Co-organised and moderated by the 2050 Pathways Platform, the panel included representatives from the World Bank, the Inter-American Development Bank and the French Development Agency, all of which stressed their support for the country.

Richard Baron, Executive Director of the 2050 Pathways Platform, also joined UNFCCC’ and NDCP’s side event on long-term climate ambition and implementation. Richard shared the Platforms support to countries in Africa, including Morocco, Nigeria, The Gambia and soon Senegal and Rwanda. He highlighted the high ambition amongst these countries towards net zero, the priority to link up climate and development priorities, the importance of cross-sectorial work in setting implementation of ambitious LTS, the strong focus to include the adaptation dimension and finally the need to support investment plans and the delivery of project that countries have identified.

 

Week 2 – 14 November to 18 November

 

Our second week at COP27 was marked by the launch of the Carbon Neutrality Coalition (CNC) Framework (event pictured above). Member countries of the CNC met at COP27 to present a framework of best practice to build and implement plans to reach net zero emissions. The framework contains a blend of country experiences and the key ingredients needed to build the ultimate recipe to reach true net zero. Read more and watch the recording (from 120 minutes).

Our Secretariat also continued engagement and networking, providing insights and sharing on our experience working with countries on LTS:

During a side event focused on communication, Türkiye’s efforts on communicating climate change were highlighted, its net zero 2053 emission target and the Long Term Climate Change Strategy 2050 (LTS) process as a model country, presenting the Communication Strategy preparation process under Türkiye’s LTS. The government also hosted an event to present the LTS work; here, the Climate Change Office highlighted that the country had advanced the NDC and LTS formulation process in hand to ensure alignment with a strong focus on a just transition. In addition, the Climate Change Action plan and Climate Law under development will provide a framework for implementing the net zero target. Speakers from UNDP, AFD, EBRD and the private sector emphasised the value of these tools to provide strong signals to the private sector and mobilise international support.

Peru in partnership with Decarboost brought together various experiences from Latin America on LTS development and financing. The Minister of Environment of Peru opened this event followed by a panel moderated by the 2050 Pathways Platform which included government representatives from Peru, Chile and Costa Rica, who reflected on their LTS status and lessons learnt in this process. A second panel with representatives from Decarboost, the private sector, the Climate Champions team and the NDCP reflected on the financial aspects of the implementation. Finally, the IDB climate change division chief offered closing remarks, highlighting the high-quality LTS-related process in LAC and the socio-economic opportunities that countries see as part of the transition. Pakistan launched their long-term vision development process during an event at COP27 which addressed the important elements to include in Pakistan’s long-term vision. Co-hosted by Pakistan’s Ministry of Climate Change and the Platform, the event included speakers and panelists representing Pakistan’s Planning Commission, Delivery Associates, GIZ, ADB, and the Sustainable Development Policy Institute.

Richard Baron moderated the UNFCCC’s side event on LT-LEDS preparation and implementation towards net-zero that brought together representatives of the United Arab Emirates, The Gambia and the United Nations Development Programme. Representatives shared approaches for LT-LEDS formulation and implementation, highlighting experiences to build national consensus and seek to maximise development gains and synergies between the SDGs and the Paris Agreement implementation to enable a just transition.
